Property Management Emergency Plan

Property Management Emergency Plan

Keep your commercial property safe with a solid emergency plan.

Emergency preparedness is a major component of a property manager’s job. In truth, property managers have a lot on their plate when it comes to their job description in general. When it comes to creating an effective and efficient emergency plan, certain things need to be taken into consideration. Otherwise, the plan could fail, which may potentially lead to devastating results. Here are a few things to keep in mind for property managers navigating the task of making an emergency plan.

Educate All Residents On Evacuation Policies

While creating an effective and efficient emergency plan is important, being able to enforce and introduce the plan to others properly is vital. For property managers, the main thing they need to alert others about is how to evacuate in the event of an emergency. Prior to an event, property managers must educate all their residents about proper evacuation measures, techniques, and protocols to ensure everyone’s safety during an actual emergency. One method many property managers use is an emergency evacuation drill. This exercise can provide residents with the guidelines on what to do and where they need to go in the event of an evacuation. Going through at least once will give tenants the practice they need to get out quickly.

Properly Mark Emergency Exits And Fire-Safe Stairwells

Another crucial measure for property managers to implement is to alert residents about where the emergency exits are located. One can send a letter to all new residents so they can have it at hand. At a minimum, the building should have accurate maps in stairwells and other key locations. A very common tragedy that can occur in both commercial or residential buildings is residents being unaware of where to go in an emergency. Not being able to evacuate can lead to devastating results.

Check Every Fire Extinguisher In The Building

Property managers have the unique and very important task of ensuring that all the building’s fire extinguishers are in proper working order. In fact, fire extinguishers should not only need routine inspections to ensure they are operating optimally, but they also need to have a strategic placement to ensure every area of the building is ready for action.
